Roadside cleaning and waste removal: keeping traffic running smoothly

keeping traffic running smoothly

It’s the latest in our series of blogs looking in closer detail at our range of services. This time around, we’re shining our specialist cleaning spotlight on our roadside cleaning service, which includes hazardous and nuisance waste removal. It’s certainly not the most visible of our services – but it’s an essential part of making the urban and rural environment across the UK cleaner and greener.

Responsive and responsible roadside cleaning

React’s specialist cleaning services can deal with cleaning and waste removal on or near the road network. This includes a wide range of different elements. One of the most difficult and sensitive areas is providing a rapid response to clear and make safe the aftermath of road traffic accidents (RTA’s). This can include the safe removal of hazardous, biohazardous or pathological waste – more details of that below.

Sometimes our services are required to respond to littering. We’re able to clean lay-bys, rest areas and roadside activity areas, and clear them of waste as necessary. But as well as accidents and carelessness, sometimes the waste that ends up by the roadside is deliberately placed there. We work to remove the eyesore and potential health hazards of indiscriminate fly-tipping. And we can restore roadsides to their previous state after temporary camp-sites have been removed too.

Roadside waste removal is sometimes a sensitive subject

The correct collection and disposal of hazardous and bio-hazardous waste is essential to protecting the public and the environment from health and safety risks. This includes biological material and materials that have come into contact or been infected with microbiological and pathological waste. It’s also essential to deal with these situations in a sensitive manner, with out undermining the urgency of a rapid response.

React is one of the very few firms with cleaning specialists trained in dealing with trauma on the road network, including cleaning in the aftermath of serious injury and fatalities. Our team is well trained, medically fit, properly equipped, security cleared and fully inoculated. We operate to industry-leading standards eg BS-EN-ISO 9001:2018 and ISO14001 for Environmental Management. What’s more, we’re a licensed waste carrier, with a fully traceable waste disposal system.

Keeping lay-bys and activity areas safe and clean

Our experienced, fully vetted operatives are available nationwide to keep public areas such as lay-bys and picnic spaces clean on a scheduled or ad-hoc basis. Proactive and ad-hoc cleaning of these areas from litter and food waste not only ensures these locations remain both hygienic and visually appealing for members of the public to use, but also negates the likelihood of further costs being incurred through pest removal or drain clearance.

One particular hazard in roadside areas is sharps and needle removal. If public spaces become contaminated with used syringes it is vitally important to clear the area quickly to ensure the safety of members of the public. Our staff are fully insured, vaccinated against all blood-borne viruses, and use robust procedures to clear affected areas quickly and safely. Once collected, any sharps and syringes are disposed of safely and we provide a certificate of disposal.
