Sometimes, cleanliness can be taken for granted. But it’s when things aren’t kept clean that problems start to occur. And in some instances, it’s no exaggeration to say that this can be life-threatening. Take railway station platforms. Keeping platforms clean and free of slip or trip hazards is vital to the safety of passengers and staff alike. In this blog, we’re going to take a closer look at our railway station platform cleaning service.

A network of transport hubs and smaller stations

The railway network is a vital part of the national infrastructure and is one of the things that keeps the UK economy moving. The network is massive, covering over 9,800 miles of track. What’s more, people have undertaken greater numbers of train journeys each year in recent decades. In the 2018-19 operating year, UK rail services provided 1.76 billion journeys (an increase of 38.5% from 1.27 billion in 2008-09).

With a network that size, it’s no wonder that there are thousands of stations. The UK is home to 2,563 train stations on the regular train network. This excludes stations on local transport networks such as the London Underground or the Glasgow Subway. And it doesn’t include the 181 heritage railways across the country either. Station platforms have high rates of footfall, and some operate almost 24 hours a day.

UK railway stations are categorized on a scale of A to F, according to their size, use and importance. For stations in the lower E and F categories, most will have no more than two platforms. But for those in categories A and B, which account for the bulk of passenger journeys, there are multiple platforms. And many larger stations also have sizeable concourses too.

Railway station platform cleaning with a focus on safety

Keeping all those railway station platforms clean is a major undertaking. Our transport cleaning teams provide scheduled nightly cleaning and ad hoc services ensure that all areas are clear. We offer the highest quality service standards to remove all litter and rubbish, and to ensure all areas are clean and free of dirt. We’re RISQS accredited, to give station operators added peace of mind that our services are of the highest quality.

Our railway station platform cleaning service positively influences passenger and staff experiences. Our focus is always on maintaining the safety of all users of the railway network. Where possible, we work when the station platforms are empty. But when we do have to work around passengers, we’ll make sure that we work with station supervisors and duty managers to minimize disruption.

For many passengers, rail travel in the UK can come with its own frustrations. We work to ensure that dirty railway station platforms are not one of them.
